This body of work was born over the summer whilst teaching in NYC. Having not been in the city for a any lengthy period of time, during the last two years of my MA, I felt detached and lonely. A friend gave me a Mamiya RZ, the tool I thought I no longer had access to. To overcome the distance I was experiencing, I began to photograph the females who came into my life. Brief encounters and fleeting friendships that were enacted upon for my lens. This is a work in progress..

Architecture for Humanity London and Hotshoe Gallery are hosting a charity print sale & auction to raise funds for the long term reconstruction in the tsunami devastated north east region of Japan. Photographs were submitted following an open call for images. The brief was to evoke and celebrate Japanese culture. The response was overwhelming with over 500 entries from both established and emerging photographers from all around the world.

100 photographs were selected. They will be on show from 2nd August and will go up for auction at Hotshoe Gallery 5th August from 6pm. All the photographs are C-type prints on Fuji Crystal Archive paper. They come framed and are 30x40cm. The starting donation will be £50. There will be an opportunity to place higher bids for the prints.

The proceeds will go to Architecture for Humanity’s Japan reconstruction programme working on the ground in Sendai. Projects include an orphanage, an art and music therapy centre, and an ‘urban acupuncture’ initiative to help get small businesses back on their feet as a way to kick start local economic recovery. On the drawing board is also a small scale fishing village – rebuilding along the coastline is not included in the Japanese government’s 10 year plan. The Sendai operation is being headed up by a team of top Japanese architects and overseen by the charity’s founder, Cameron Sinclair.

As well as the exhibition there will be a video sent from the team on the ground in Sendai.

A ‘for Japan’ poster will also be for sale.

Art During one of my previous obsessions, reviewing Woody Allen’s Shadows and Fog, I talked about visiting the city centre in the middle of the night, when the only company were the street lights – this was before twenty-four licensing when the average Liverpool pedestrianised area was deserted, desolate and quiet. I likened it to Carlo Di Palma cinematography, but something I failed to mention was the orange glow that rendered across the pavements and walls, giving everything a slightly artificial quality, like a film sound stage.

It’s that orange glow which Rachel Louise Brown captures perfectly in The Boarding School, her contribution to the group show Album at Wolstenholme Creative Space. She spent a year creating work at this educational establishment inhabited by Japanese students whose parents are business people in London. In the accompanying information, Brown explains that she’d walk about the grounds at night and “experienced the psychological effects of fear and the unknown”. She's fascinated by the way analogue photography can “absorb, abstract and portray the psychology of artificiality”.

There’s a shot of the Manor House, the glow of an unseen light thrown across the building; some trees silhouetted to the point of abstraction and perhaps most surprisingly three portraits of the students themselves, in end of year poses, smiling enigmatically but surprisingly lacking in sinister intent as though heading to a midnight feast. The overall impression is magical, of capturing a memory or emotion and like the best photography drawing the viewer into the world of the photographer, be with her as she tramples about the grounds not sure what she might find.

Protected Characteristics is an exhibition marking the introduction of the Equality Act in October 2010. The exhibition brings together artists' responses to the Act and features video, sculptural, photographic and performance works.

The Act introduces a duty for public bodies to eliminate discrimination and victimisation against people who have a 'protected characteristic'. The duty also requires public bodies to advance equal opportunities and good relations between people who share a 'protected characteristic' and those who do not.

The exhibition examines the ideas of characterisation, categorisation, the politicisation of personal traits, and the identification of cultural and social value. The Equality Act identifies core human ‘characteristics’ that it aims to protect in law, these are Age; Disability; Gender Reassignment; Marriage or Civil Partnership; Pregnancy and Maternity; Race; Religion or Belief; Sex; and Sexual Orientation.

Policy questions have been raised about these categories and their impact on the community and the diversity of the equalities sector. This exhibition aims to bring these questions into the arena of art, giving artists the opportunity to make connections between social policy and its presentational value and ask different questions. What happens when we categorise? What is the force in a face, the body or in a characteristic? What is the nature of protectiveness as an aesthetic or relational characteristic? What does art tell us about inequality or diversity that law or policy does not?

The exhibition has been organised by the RCA Student Support Officer with the Students Union as part of DiverseRCA, a series of public events that examines different strands of human rights.

Curated by Jack Tan, all the exhibiting artists are RCA graduates or staff and include: a special commission by Gaea Todd, Dick Jewell, Helene Uffren, James Green, Jessie Brennan, Jo Longhurst, Karolina Raczynska, Mark Hayward, Matthew Pagett, Mia Fernandes, Nicolas Myers, Nina Mangalanayagam, Rachel Louise Brown, Robin Bale and The Methods Lab (Yanki Lee with students from RCA design departments and Media, Art & Design Facility, Genk, Belgium).

'The Story of S' - Paris 2010. Tests

'THE STORY OF S'

S is a body in space, a character, travelling a path that uncontrollably forms itself. S is a performance; reacting to the individual spaces and bodies that cross her path. Is S real or a representation? Does S feel or is she fantasy? Every time the location changes, the movement alters and the story must progress.

Life it seems can exist only through a collation of photographs. Time continues, unstoppable; the moment dies. The photograph embodies the image of a body in space, at a particular moment; a puncture in the continuous framework of time. The imagination must narrate, subjectively that which exists only as a fragment. The photograph embodies a memory of emotion that can only be imagined; did it ever exist?

S searches for the emotions of 'Fear' & 'Desire' in an attempt to feel what is real. S searches for images that can fill the void of what can only be visualised through representation. A way to make tangible that which can only be experienced in the self.

S is a detective, an anthropologist and an auteur. With a child's eye she is curious. The camera becomes the key to other worlds. The dead object an extension of her eye; a key to a world that only exists through it. She abstracts the representation further away from the real.

S invites the bodies crossing her path to become a part of the story that doesn't exist. Is S a voyeur or a director? The Story of S relies on the memories and emotions of the bodies that characterize it. They become that whom they think they should be; a performance.

Using the world as its script, spaces as its stage and strangers as its characters. The story exists only as images. Interwoven, collaborative narratives created with strangers in strange places.

The Story of S will never exist beyond ones imagination.

I have made it to the shortlist for this much needed exhibition being organised by the Womens European Lobby. It's aim is to create a dialogue about the contemporary state of being female. This is a great achievement for me, even to be considered for the shortlist and shows that the things I am thinking about are very much of relevance. Fingers crossed....

The last rays of daylight struggled to peer through the black clouds. Darkness surrounded me as I stood in the middle of the playing fields. I stared out towards the boundary of dense forest. The night time creatures began their haunting song. I looked out over the faintly moonlit tennis courts and an unfamiliar light caught my eye. I crept slowly over to investigate. Getting closer and closer, clambering through long uncut grass, I made it to the sheds behind the tennis court. My heart beating louder than my thoughts, I quietly moved forwards as close as I could. Unusual noises surrounded me as I pressed the shutter. I noticed the giant padlock. I picked up the camera. I ran.

It is my honour to now be a part of the Exquisite Corpse Collective. A group of highly talented photographers building up on the narrative of the visual image.........

Exquisite corpse photo is a photography collective that uses the exquisite corpse method of collaboration, in which words or images are collectively assembled. Each contributor builds upon the last person’s contribution, thus making it a never-ending narrative of thought. For our little project here, one photographer posts a photo that is in direct response to the previous photo in the queue. Whether that is based on content or aesthetic is up to the photographer. Sometimes these connections are not completely evident to the viewer upon first glance. If for some reason one of the collective do not produce images that make sense within the larger context of the project, they will be immobilized and punished in ways that are unimaginable.

I have been struggling recently to explain my work as it and I am in a turbulent flux. I showed my work to Manuel Capurso (a photographic artist and graduate from LCC) and this was his response. It is really interesting for me how someone else perceives the work. I don't want to give too many clues, too much information can close down the dialogue. I am really fascinated with what he had to say so I thought I would share,

"I have to admit there is a strange feeling.....looking at your photos....they do transmit me a sort of provocative uncertainties. there is a sense of emptiness and incommunicability.......it seems that your photo don't have a start and don't have an end, there is a sense of anxiety, they could go forever....almost suspended in time and place....I don't know why but while i was looking at them (especially the series I want to be just like you) i remembered (very unusual for me....maybe one of my two cells was working at that time!!!)....the line of a poem (the infinite) from an italian poet of the beginning of the XIX century..........."but sitting here, and watching here, in thought, I create interminable spaces, greater than human silences, and deepest quiet, where the heart barely fails to terrify!!"..
