Less Common More Sense - Design Publication of the Year 2008 : Guardian Media Awards

Unfortunately I couldn't make it to the Guardian Media Awards but I was assured by Ronan, Tia and Hei Shing that it was an amazing time. Tia has now taken over my role as deputy editor and I am sure she will do an amazing job! Well done Team Less Common!

I am just a girl, New York. 2008. - Preliminary shots

Old shizzle - Clash Magazine Editorial

I trugged a suitcase packed with my trusty Arri light and a Diana F camera, that I had just been given as a present, to the infamous Griffin Pub in the Eastend of London. The upstairs of the pub is this amazing musty, alive in wonderland / old mans underground poker room. Just me, myself and the ghosts shot away and got these vintage looking shots. Clash published them along with others as a series of squares on a page - I love it when a magazine listens to my ideas :)

Why do I find these girls so fascinating?!

These twins in The Shining have been a constant resource for my thinking. Even in the saturated colours of 'I Want to be Just Like You' they are still a constant reference for the sinister nature driving the work. But what is the sinister nature? Is it the loss of childhood in contemporary society? Is it a metaphor for that time when you are letting go of yourself as a child? Or is it the vulnerability of being a child? I don't know but all I know is that I find kids in  The Shining and and horror film psychologically disturbing! And for some reason I know they will fuel my work for many years to come.

Guy Bourdin - The mind I would like to have known!

The surreal nature in which Bourdin chooses to capture his women makes them abstract props in his slightly messed up mind. Obsessed with sex, death, red and green Bourdin made sinister yet playful depictions for the fashion industry. Depictions that were narrative to the point of mirroring some made up movie scene. His women flamboyant, powerful yet submissive to his camera, with big 80s hair and rouge lips (when the faces are captured). The big hair and red lips is something I reference in my own work. I always have to have red lips. The ultimate sign of femininity and empowerment - classy and slutty at the same time :)
